The Covingtons were Amelia/ Isle of Wight /Lunenburg Virginians and so was John Hardy. The Covingtons lived south of Campbellton SC near Augusta, GA near Hamburg. A Thomas Hardy had a large wearhouse in Augusta, but am not sure if it is the same family. John B. Covington rented lot 231 in Hamburg http://www.arete-designs.com/shultz/genealogy/index.html.
William Covington Sr b ca 1720 died after his will was written -dated 20 APR 1785 (prob. died 7 Mar 1789) A descendant said he accompanied a daughter to Edgefield- maybe Mary Covington Blackwell- and died there. William Covington's sons John, William Jr. and Joseph Covington all signed a deed which John Hardy was acquiring in Charleston SC 1784. The Hardys were probably staying with the Covingtons while looking for land.

Macon Ga newspaper 'MACON TELEGRAPH' of May 4, 1841 (Bibb County, Ga)
"John B. Covington, Esq, died near Altoona, Ga. on 9th inst. suddenly, formerly of Hamburg, SC."
Hamburg was located in SC just across the river from Augusta Ga and is the area which was called formerly south of Campbellton. He rented a ware house (perhaps on lot 231) in Hamburg SC across from Augusta GA, See http://www.arete-designs.com/shultz/genealogy/index.html John B. Covington's family was already living in Alabama when he died and he may have been on a trip back to South Carolina to take care of some business. When John Burnette Covington left Hamburg, SC after 1833, he first settled in Cherokee Co. Alabama.
John Burnette Covington was married to Lucilla Taylor b ca 1789 in SC. His descendants said that Mary Fair, a half/sister of the Covington children, daughter of Lucille and Isaac Fair was married to a Mr Anderson (of Edgefield SC?) and it was said that Mr Anderson was quite rich and left the Covington children much money but the Covington children reported that it never was trickled down or made available to them. So Mary Fair, step daughter to John Burnett Covington, married Mr. Anderson and they had no children but left her Covington half siblings money.
1810 Lucilla Fair widow of Isaac Fair, living next to William Taylor (probably her father who was b ca 1750). Lucilla Fair has a young boy and a young girl (Mary?). She apparently married John Burnette Covington about 1815. Lucilla's daughter Mary Fair and her unknown brother went along to Alabama.
I think Lucilla was a Taylor, although, Taylor and Traylor are sometimes mixed up. The Traylors also went to Alabama. Thomas Traylor died about 1850 in Dallas Co AL:

I am the ggg grandaughter of William B. Covington born in South Carolina in about 1769 who went to Sumner County, TN at some point, married and raised a family. This was likely a second marriage. I think he may have been in VA at some point. I have much data on him and his children and descendants but unable to locate his birth and place and parents to day. Regina Bruner Markowicz

As I was going through the Wills with the name of Jones or Moore on the SC archives, I came across the Will of William Covington, looks like a dau. Harriett married a George B. Moore. It has been nail bitting trying to find the right Moores or Jones. My ggg/grandfather was a Seaborn Jones b. abt 1796 in SC. I believe he is a brother to the William Jones who married Sarah Padget and named a son Seaborn and a son Simpson. My Seaborn also named a son Simpson and a son Seaborn. Who we believe to be my Seaborns father, Benjamin Jones was in Edgefield in 1810 and before that in Darlington. Benjamin and Seaborn moved to Dallas Co. AL. I believe Benjamin died in Dallas Co bef 1850 and Seaborn moved to Lauderdale Co., MS abt 1836/38 and died there in 1853. I have also been looking for the father of Charles Moore who married Mahala Johnson, they are also my ggg/grandparents. They were also in Dallas Co., AL and moved to Lauderdale Co., MS. There is also a Nelson Moore who is somehow related to Charles Moore and lives near Charles in Lauderdale. Nelson was b. abt 1808 SC, his father was a John Moore who died in Darlington Co., SC abt 1853 or 55. These Moores came from NC to SC.Ellen Jones Evans ellenevans@sbcglobal.net
